Pressure Point Identification

  • To locate BL 47, first, identify the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra (C7), palpable during neck flexion and extension. C6 starts to slide anteriorly as C7 remains palpable.
  • The spinous process of the 9th thoracic vertebra (T9) is located nine spinous processes below C7.
  • Alternatively, locate T7, level with the inferior angle of the scapula when the patient is seated with arms hanging down. T9 is two thoracic vertebrae below.
  • BL 47 (Hunmen) is then found 3 cun lateral to the lower border of T9. Ganshu (BL 18) is at the same level but 1.5 cun lateral to T9.
  • Points between Fufen (BL 41) and Zhibian (BL 54) are in the lateral branch of the Bladder Channel, while those between Fengmen (BL 12) and Baihuanshu (BL 30) are in the medial branch.
