Location

  • Gaohuangshu is located 3 cun (about 4 finger-breadths) lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 4th thoracic vertebra (T4).
  • To locate T4, find the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra (C7) first. It remains palpable during neck flexion and extension, while C6 starts to slide anteriorly. T4 is four spinous processes below C7.
  • Alternatively, locate T3, generally on the level of the medial end of the scapular spine when the patient is seated with arms hanging down. T4 is one thoracic vertebra below T3.
